Summer work experience at Innovative Technology

While most pupils are returning to education this week having enjoyed long lie-ins for the last six weeks during the school summer holidays, two local students from Blue Coat School and OTC have spent their summer gaining work experience at local banknote validator manufacturer Innovative Technology Ltd of Derker Street, Oldham.

Charlotte Pickering (Blue Coat School) is currently studying Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Science at A-Level. Charlotte worked with Mathematicians from the Research & Development Department at Innovative Technology, to put her studies into practice through work experience.

Summing up the six weeks work experience Charlotte, said “ I have loved learning more advanced maths and science, as well as learning more in the areas of computing and electronics through the work I undertook. The team were very friendly and it was a wonderful environment to work in. Following my work experience I feel prepared for university study and more prepared for employment in the future.”

The second pupil, George Priestley (a student at Oldham College) spent six weeks within the IT Department at Innovative Technology. George is currently working towards an IT Hardware and Networking Level 3 qualification and is just about to start his second year.

Innovative Technology has strong links with Oldham College through their Chairman David Bellis MBE who is been a long-time supporter of the college and indeed Oldham itself.

Following the placement George said “I chose to do a work placement over the summer to gain some real IT experience and discover how a workplace operates. I have enjoyed all of the new things I have learnt regarding networking as I haven’t had much experience in that side of IT and this is what we will be focusing on next year at college.”

Two other school pupils undertook shorter two-week placements during the summer to help guide them with their future career path.

Innovative Technology was pleased to offer these technical summer placements this year to assist the pupils to identify potential degree subjects. The success of the placements means that similar placements should be offered again in the future. Some of the pupils may even be asked back for seasonal employment during their next holidays.
